A compelling war novel by H G Wells

H G Wells, best known for his science fiction, wrote a compelling novel about the Great War.
Mr Britling Sees It Through, published in 1916 while the war was still raging, became an acclaimed bestseller only to lost its lustre and languish in the doldrums of English Literature.
Britling is based on Wells himself, a successful man of letters enjoying an idyllic Edwardian summer until “the war to end all wars” turns his comfortable, complacent world upside down.
Maxim Gorky, the Russian writer, called it “the finest, most courageous, truthful and humane book written in Europe in the course of this accursed war”.
Those interested in the Great War, and its lasting impact on the modern world, should seek it out.
